Co-Creation Platform

Every organization has its own set of management practices. To achieve business technology convergence, an organization must continuously and actively evolve its management practices around a common framework. Managing that evolution is the purpose of BTM Fusion 360.

Designing Business Technology Management Practices

BTM Fusion 360 enables a practitioner to design a targeted, staged maturity advancement that starts with current management practice and evolves towards convergence. The building blocks are the 17 business technology management capabilities, each of which is defined in the BTM Framework. The BTM Fusion 360 co-creation approach then enables the user to modify and/or extend the BTM Framework to adapt to the unique situation of a respective organization.

For example, the management capability of Strategic and Tactical Governance (STG) is a foundation BTM capability – a collaborative business and technology decision capability that underpins business technology convergence. The BTM Framework defines the decisions, the bodies that make them, the decision process, the information required by each decision body and the technology and automation tools necessary to make collaborative business technology decisions. The STG Capability does not stand-alone – it is intimately connected to other BTM Capabilities that provide the decision context such as strategy, policy, risk, architecture and investment portfolios. Customizing STG for a particular organization will include specifying the following:

  • Investment information: cost, business case, performance measures, and risk
  • Structure and taxonomy of the investment portfolio
  • The criteria used to render a decision
  • The process steps involved in analyzing, making, implementing and measuring the impact of each decision
  • The decision outcomes (approved, modified, delayed, rejected)
  • Financial guidelines, investment hurdles, target ROI, allocation targets
  • Members of the decision and support bodies that make the investment decisions.
  • Applications and information sources for the above

The BTM Framework defines each of these elements in general terms – the lexicon of Business Technology Management. The BTM Fusion 360 environment enables the practitioner to provide the precision and specifics needed to develop the repeatable and actionable management practices that drive business technology convergence. In other words, BTM Fusion 360 transforms the BTM Framework into the tailored set of management practices necessary to drive an organization to business technology convergence.

Digital Environment

The BTM Fusion 360 environment is a digital instance of the BTM Framework combined with a knowledge repository that provides the user with the essential ingredients necessary to co-create a customized design for each enterprise or client situation. The BTM framework is built as a hierarchical structure of digital objects that together describe the process, organization, information and technology dimensions of each of the 17 BTM capabilities. Users can work with an individual capability (Strategic and Tactical Governance, for example) or with multiple capabilities (the four capabilities comprising the Strategic Investment management Functional Area, for example), using the BTM Maturity Assessment to identify the capabilities that hold the most risk or that can provide the most immediate value.

BTM Fusion 360 is designed around standard Microsoft products to provide a familiar look and feel. The digital objects are organized in a hierarchy that resembles the Windows Explorer folder structure, viewed in the familiar place on the left side of the screen. The right side of the screen displays one of the following:

  • Object attributes and description
  • Models of the object, with the object active – clicking them displays the object attributes and description
  • Relevant portions of the Knowledge Repository

Hierarchy objects can be created, edited, copied, moved and referenced using familiar copy/paste and WYSIWYG editing operations. Fusion 360 allows the user to build on the Framework definition to accommodate unique organizational structures or to extend the BTM Framework into new areas. BTM Fusion 360 also provides a customized version of Microsoft Visio environment to create and edit Models; the digital smart objects are imported into Visio through a lightweight plug-in that provides the user access to the full hierarchy. Newly developed or modified objects are automatically imported and synchronized, giving the user a flexible and comprehensive design environment.
